Find out how I made $14,136 in October from blogging.Welcome to October’s online income report. It’s time to look at my monthly income report and track my progress over the past month.

Background information on my monthly income reports.

This all started out as my extra income report because before October of 2013, I still had my day job (yes, it’s now been one year since I quit!). In those extra income reports, I included all of the income I made except for what I earned at my day job.

In September of 2013, I turned in my notice and my last official day at that job was in October of 2013. Now, my income reports consist of the many different ways I earn an income.

Many have asked why I would ever want to publicly post my income each month. I publish these monthly income reports for two main reasons:

  • Before I started blogging, I knew nothing about side hustling and making money online. I didn’t think side hustles were worth the time, and I thought the only way to really increase your income was through your day job through raises and promotions. If it weren’t for others publishing their monthly income reports each month, I don’t know if I would have ever attempted side hustling. I want to help others see the positives in side hustling and how it can change your life.
  • I also like to publish my income reports each month because it’s a way for me to look back, learn from my mistakes and see what I need to change or improve on. My monthly income posts are a great way for me to look back and keep track of everything. It’s also entertaining to go back to older income posts and read about the funny things I did to make extra money. Everyone’s got to start somewhere, right?

I know I say this every month, but it is the truth. Life is great now that I am doing what I want to do. I look forward to each and every work day and it is a wonderful thing. I love what I do so much that it is often hard to break me away from working. That is something I would have never felt at my old day job.

October was also a great month because I won a fun giveaway. I didn’t include the giveaway amount in October’s monthly income since it is not related to my business. I am extremely grateful for the winning though and it has motivated me to start entering more giveaways. Are you a giveaway fanatic? I would love to hear what the best thing is that you’ve ever won!

Now onto my income report!

How was my online income in October?

October was yet another great month. It wasn’t as great as September, but I’m definitely not complaining.

I have several plans in store for future months and I don’t think I’ve been this excited about my business. I’ve always been excited, but right now I am EXTREMELY EXCITED. I’m hoping these plans and excitement will turn into successful projects, and an income as well.

I’m really trying to spend more time working on affiliate income, as I would like to have more of my income each month be passive. That way I can focus on other things that may take longer to build up (such as an ebook) but still be able to bring in an income and save for my financial goals.

Anyway, last month I made $15,245.81 in business income, before expenses.

$14,136 in October Income – My Monthly Online Income Report

This is for the month of October and before fees and expenses (most fees and expenses that lower the amount above total around $1,110, which includes VAs/staff writers for my other websites, technical assistance on my websites, PayPal fees, etc.) being taken out.

After expenses and fees, I made approximately $14,136. In the amount above, I do not include the amount I bring in to the websites I provide services to. I only include the amounts that are my actual earnings from my services.

Below are some of my other extra income updates (I publish an update every month but only included some of them below. If you go to my extra income page then you can read them all):

Blog News.

Nothing too big on MakingSenseofCents has happened recently. I did rearrange the menu above. I now have everything sectioned off into categories to make my website look a little more clean. I also added a Recommendations page that is currently a work-in-progress.

I also finally started promoting my newsletter on my blog and started accepting emails for it. I cannot believe I waited this long. If you are interested in starting your own newsletter, I recommend Aweber. I regret putting this off for so long.

Aweber is a MUST if you have a blog. It is a way for readers to subscribe to your blog posts and your newsletters. If you are currently using a free service such as Feedburner, you should switch immediately because that is the number one mistake bloggers make (and I made that mistake myself as well). You can start using Aweber for just $1 for your first month to test it out.

I accepted a few interviews, and some of them went live in October. Below is a little snapshot of a few of them:

  • I did an interview for WiseBread that was published. You can read about me in the article How One Young Entrepreneur Paid Off $40,000 in Student Debt By Age 24.
  • I was mentioned in the article ‘I Bombed a Job Interview’: 10 People Reveal the Mistakes That Cost Them a Gig on Learnvest.
  • I was also mentioned in ReadyForZero’s article 17 All-Star Bloggers Share Their Best Fall Budgeting Tips.

If you are wanting to start a blog of your own, read my post How To Start a WordPress Blog. It gives step by step instructions on starting your own blog.

Wes’s website.

We haven’t done much with Wes’s website in the past month. Actually, nothing has happened. I need to stop forgetting about his website and put it at the top of my to-do list.

My plans for my website and online income:

  • Publish an eBook – I have written down a few ideas for a two separate books, and started outlining one with different sections to cover. I’m not sure when or if anything will actually happen with either one, but it is fun to think about.
  • Promote more – I have been getting better at promoting my posts. I have noticed that working on improving my images has led to more visitors from Pinterest, which is awesome! Some of you have asked me what I use for my images, I use PicMoney and I highly recommend them! They have a free service and also an upgraded service which is still very affordable.
  • Accept more interviews. – I took part in several interviews in October. Saying yes to every interview opportunity has been a wonderful thing so far. I have my first podcast scheduled for December as well. I still get nervous with each and every interview, but it is something I am working to get over. Is this normal?

Staff Writing.

Staff writing is still going well, and I am looking to add one more client in November. That one client will probably be the last one I add to my list for awhile though.

Here’s my monthly shameless plugin: If any of you need a staff writer or just a one-time content writer, please let me know. Whether you need a couple of articles every week, or just a single post with no ongoing relationship, I am your person. I can write regular content and be hired as a staff writer, content to fill in gaps in your writing schedule, content for advertising and so on. My turnaround time is quick and I am reliable.

Update On My Blog and Social Media Management Services.

In the month of October, I managed several different websites for other owners. I’m still loving it and it’s an area that I hope to continue to grow.

Affiliate income – This is finally starting to grow!

Affiliate income is finally starting to grow! For the past three years, I never really gave affiliate income any much of a chance. I didn’t think it would be worth it before.

However, starting in September, I changed my mind about it and started putting more effort towards it. This effort is starting to pay off.

My affiliate income amount isn’t anything crazy, but it is something. I believe I am at about double where I usually am, and November will be an even better month because I will be receiving payments from October’s work.

Some of you have asked me what my method for affiliate income is. With affiliate income, what’s been working for me is that I am only reviewing products that I actually use and love. It makes writing reviews on these products much more fun since I know others can benefit from them as well.

$14,136 in October Income – My Monthly Online Income Report

Business and Extra Income in October ($14,136, after most expenses)

  • Staff writing – $700
  • Managing websites and social media for clients – $5,611
  • Website-Related (From the 6 websites I own – advertising, partnerships & Adsense) – $6,885
  • Affiliate Income – $940
  • Selling Items From Our Home – $0
  • Miscellaneous (not related to blogging and online income) – $0
  • Mystery Shopping – $0
  • Rent – $0. We no longer rent a room in our house and won’t be adding roommates.

One question I am asked nearly every time I publish my monthly online income report is whether or not I can further break down my income. I have never fully broken everything down line by line, and I do this mainly to protect myself and those I provide services to.

Most bloggers who completely break apart their income have most of their income coming from affiliate links, while I do not. Keep in mind that a majority of my income comes from private clients that I work for so sharing their name and what they pay me wouldn’t be the correct way to run a business.

Also, please keep in mind that I work for myself. This means that I have to cover all taxes (which are around 30%), health insurance, and all other benefits/expenses that an employer would normally provide.

Comparisons and 2014 online income total (after expenses, but before taxes)

  • Total extra income for October: $14,136
  • Income in September: $15,272
  • Difference: -1,136
  • Total so far in 2014: $135,722

How did you do in October? What are your extra/business/online income goals? Why do you work towards making extra money?

  1. Wow, thanks for inspiring us newbies with your success! We have yet to figure out how to actually make much money on our blog, but in the meantime we hope sharing our stories and experiences can be a blessing to someone….even if just leaving a legacy (aka PF instruction manual) for our children! 🙂 Congrats again! You make it sound easy since you enjoy it so much, but I know you work hard too!

    1. Thanks Deb! Yes, life is definitely easier now that I enjoy working so much 🙂

  2. Russ Benk

    Thanks for sharing Michelle,
it is great to see others success. It encourages me to keep at it. hopefully one day in the near future I will be able to make the sort of money you are currently enjoying.
    All the best.

  3. Another solid month with nice diversification. Do you think you’ve almost hit a levelling out point where you won’t have the time (or desire) to push for additional income sources and just maintain the amount you have? Or will you continue to grow it, perhaps outsourcing more as you expand?

    1. Thanks! My plan is to outsource more and try harder for affiliate income. That way I won’t be leveling out 🙂

  4. I am impressed with how you did in October though your September is higher a bit. You many side hustles like the staff writing and managing websites. Keep it up! Hope the coming months are as good as this month or even better! Good luck!

    1. Thanks Jayson! 🙂

  5. Carolyn Flanagan

I’m going to look into affiliate income some more!

    1. Good luck! 🙂 I love affiliate income.

  6. Wow, Michelle! Way to go! I’m continually impressed with your incredible hustle. October was a great month for us, but I know November will bring higher spending since we’re hosting Thanksgiving 🙂

    1. Thank you Mrs. Frugalwoods 🙂

November will bring higher spending for us as well. I can’t wait until the spending stops! 🙂

  7. It seems it been another good month for you. I am glad you are able to put yourself out there and tell us how you are doing with your monthly online incomes. I enjoy reading it!

    1. Thank you Natalie 🙂

  8. Income Surfer

Great job, yet again. I’m sure you’re going to continue to expand your online empire, but I’m curious if you’re going to reinvest more in content (like owning additional sites with staff writers) or services (for others). Either way, I enjoy following along. Thank you
    -Bryan

    1. Hello Bryan!

I own 6 websites, and have staff writers for those 🙂

  9. Sarah

Michelle you are SOOO inspiring!!! I hope so bad to be where you are at one day! I hope one of your ideas for your e-books is on building a successful website, haha 🙂 Seriously though – Congratulations!!! That is such an incredible accomplishment! I do have one question for you – how did you get into managing websites and social media? I currently freelance write and edit, but have never thought about managing other websites! Do sites advertise when they are looking for someone or are you mostly contacted privately?

Thank you and again, congrats!!! A celebration is in order!! 🙂

    1. Thank you Sarah! 🙂

I have usually been contacted privately about managing websites. One that I manage I was actually the one to reach out to the owner because she posted something online about how she was looking for a website manager.

  10. Awesome job Michelle. Looks like you did pretty well with the affiliate marketing in just one month. Looking forward to your increased success.

    1. Thank you Syed! 🙂

  11. I’ve been trying to amp up my affiliate income too. It’s slow going.

    1. Yeah, I never really put much effort towards it until recently. I regret waiting so long!

  12. Liz

Nice work as usual Michelle. I would love to hear more about your hubby’s website. I know my husband has started to take interest in the blogging thing as well. Maybe he can learn from Wes : )

    1. Wes has hardly done anything with his website. His website is about the outdoors 🙂

  13. Great job on your income, Michelle! You better get to work on Wes’s website! =)

  14. Another incredible month – way to go, Michelle! Whenever I see your impressive monthly updates, I always think of the saying “Do what you love and the money will follow”. It seems like you have a great work-life balance and since you love what you’re doing, it really pays off due to your high quality work. Keep it up!!

    1. Thank you Charlotte! Yes, life is great now 🙂

  15. They say if you don’t get nervous before an interview, then you don’t really care enough. Looks like you care lots! 😀

    1. Haha yes I guess I care a lot 🙂

  16. Veronica Lee

You rock, Michelle! Ha! I’ve just received my income for October – a mere $100 from Adsense after 6 years of blogging!

    1. Haha yeah Adsense takes awhile to finally earn something. After that first check though, I’m sure it will be sooner for the next one 🙂

  17. I always say that once I can make over $10,000 / month, I can quit my day job. Seeing your numbers are a fresh reminder that it’s actually possible. P.s. I know you didn’t ask, but if you’re still tossing eBook ideas around, I know I personally would love to read an eBook by you about how to monetize and make money online (whether advertising / staff writing / etc) and what to expect at each increment (6 months out / 1 yr out / etc). Right now, I’m reading “How To Blog For Profit Without Selling Your Soul” by Ruth Soukup and it’s been incredible valuable thus far.

    1. Thanks Natalie! I just made note of your idea and will definitely try to do something with that 🙂

  18. Good to see Aweber is working out for you – I’d recommend it over MailChimp at this point. For those who plan on having a smaller list (under 5,000 subscribers) TinyLetter is a completely free option and also pretty simple. I’ve had good luck with them so far. I agree that relying on Feedburner isn’t the best choice anymore.

    1. Thanks Leslie! I can’t believe I waited this long to get serious about Aweber.

  19. Good job on the affiliate income!!

  20. Kayla @ Shoeaholicnomore

I hope you never stop publishing these reports – so inspiring!

    1. Thanks Kayla! I enjoy writing them so I don’t think I will be stopping anytime soon 🙂

  21. anna pry

I think its so cool that you let others in on how you’re doing financially, sometimes I wonder about other bloggers I read and would love to know how one’s income compares to others. Haha, maybe that’s just me being nosy! Would love to know what giveaway you won also 🙂 Congrats!

    1. Yes, I love reading income reports 🙂

  22. Way to go! I love reading about your successes!

  23. Great job on the income Michelle! I agree with it being unprofessional in regards to sharing exactly how much your clients pay you and what exactly you are doing for them. You are providing a great service so keep it up! And congrats on getting the affiliate income to grow!

    1. Thanks! Yes, I don’t think it’s right at all to share that. You would be surprised with how many people ask though!

  24. You just reminded me that I really need to do something about my email service. I’m still using Feedburner and have no excuses why I haven’t made the switch yet.

    1. Switch to Aweber! I highly recommend their service. This is my affiliate link 🙂 https://www.makingsenseofcents.com/AWeber

  25. Adrienne

Congrats on another awesome month Shell!

  26. Good job on making it over the $1,000 month mark! What do you do for extra income?

  27. My plan to keeping it growing would be affiliate income and outsourcing different tasks. I’ve been getting better when it comes to losing some control so that I can outsource and have more time for other tasks.

The six websites are in very similar niches. Mainly related to finance in some way.

  28. I’m sorry Catherine 🙁

Are you stuck because of lack of time?

  29. Another awesome month for you! 🙂 I do like reading income reports – one day I will join you (though probably not in the league of your numbers) in posting them I hope. Do you ever think you’ll expand your business to having people work for you in the more long term?

    1. Yeah, I will definitely be outsourcing more in the future. Right now I have three different people who do different tasks for me.

  30. Betsy Barnes

Wow, great numbers! We are working towards building up our emergency savings. It had gotten fairly low a year ago due to moving expenses and vehicle repairs. I’m working now on getting some items ready to sell that we don’t need, this will certainly help. 🙂

  31. October was an outstanding month. I finally was offered a full time gig. I also had another successful month of making over $100 online. My goal for this month is to have 800 twitter followers.

    1. Wow sounds like a great month for you Jason. Congrats!

  32. Wow this is so inspiring! Thanks so much for posting all of this. It’s interesting to me to see this kind of stuff! And also- congrats on winning a giveaway this month 🙂 I actually just started entering giveaways and have won quite a bit- I am over the moon about it- Xmas gifts for my family 🙂

    1. Thanks Stevie!

Do you mind me asking what you’ve won? I love hearing about giveaways!

  33. Melissa @ Sunburnt Saver

Even though you’re down from last month, you are still killin’ it, lady! In a good way 🙂 What I need to figure out is those 6 other websites you manage – they’re not personal finance, I’m assuming… whaaaaa? I LOVE it, and I love learning more from you! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂

    1. The other 6 are finance-related 🙂

  34. Nice job Michelle. I’m also looking to add one or two new freelance clients ASAP, so best of luck to you (and me haha).

  35. Sarah

Congrats on another great month! I just started my blog, thanks to your blogging post and you answered dozens of questions for me a few weeks ago. Thank you for all of your assistance.

I love your income reports, they make me realize that anything is possible! 🙂

    1. Thanks Sarah! Congrats on starting your blog. It’s great! Let me know if you have any questions about blogging- I’m always here to help! 🙂

  36. Wow! Thank you for such wonderful information. I came to your blog by way of a giveaway but will be returning to read more about how to make some extra money! Thanks!

    1. Thanks Jackie 🙂 Glad you found my blog.

  37. Jill Myrick

Wow that is definitely a substantial income.
An income such as this would be a blessing here and would allow us to accumulate savings much quicker.
Wishing you the very best with your continued success.

    jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com

    1. Thank you Jill. Do you work towards extra income?

  38. So amazed by you every month! I would kill to make 1/3 of your income, lol! I hope I can grow traffic and affiliate income as well as get better paying clients. This past month was better than the previous month. So progress is good!

    1. Good job on a better month! Progress is always great 🙂

  39. Samuel

    Hey Michelle,

I think you are doing amazing for someone who has been blogging for about a year. I just looked at your blog management services. I think this is a great idea! There are so many corporate websites that I have visited specifically in the healthcare arena that leave their blogs unmanaged. I think you have a huge opportunity with this service. Thanks for sharing your success!

    1. Hey Samuel!

I’ve been blogging for over three years 🙂 I did it on the side of my day job for the first 2 years, but I still worked on it for 40 hours a week.

I’ll have to look into those blogs. Thanks for the heads up!

  40. Jef Miles

Thanks for posting Michelle, this is very motivating and shows that it really is possible :)..

Out of interest, how long would you say you’re able to put into this? Am always looking to be more efficient with the time I spend on a side hustle..

Would love to read an E-Book you would write. Congrats on this and I’d say the monthly income goal I’d set would be 10K

    Keep going strong 🙂

    1. It’s really hard to estimate the time I spend each day. I’m on my laptop pretty much all day long, but I take breaks to go outside, to eat, to have fun, and more.

  41. Ritchy

Wow this is a great insight to have. Very detailed and a well written article about your October reapings

    1. Thank you Ritchy 🙂

  42. Karen Chayne Sanchez

WOW! Congratulations Michelle! you inspire and motivate me to work harder in earning money online. I’m so glad I’ve found your amazing blog through your cash giveaway! 😉

    1. Thanks Karen! Glad you found me 🙂

  43. Keep it up Michelle. Completely inspired every time I read these posts. Thanks for the openness.

  44. Nikolina

I still dont understand how anyone makes so much money blogging, wouldnt even know where and with what to start, even after reading your posts about it…. Well done girl!

    1. Well, it’s not all from blogging. I own 6 different websites, staff write for others, manage websites for others, and more 🙂

  45. Nichole @Budget Loving Military Wife

Congrats on two unbelievably successful months! Very encouraging to see someone successfully pursuing her dreams! Wishing you the very best!

  46. Thanks Dan! I have 6 websites. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all!

    1. Haha it gets hard but luckily I outsource some stuff 🙂

  47. Jasmine P

    Wow, this is awesome!

  48. 2 questions/requests 😉

    1. How did you end up getting so many clients for managing their website and social media. I find it hard to find places that are open to this since they usually just have an intern to do it.

    2. Could you do a round-up post of your favorite other bloggers who have monthly income reports? I follow a few other than yourself, but I’m sure you know of more than me.

    1. Hey Rachel!

Most of my clients found me. I don’t really have too, too many clients, as I have begun to leave the lower-paying ones and just stick with the higher-paying ones so that I can focus on others areas of my business.

Yes, that is a great idea! I will do a roundup soon. Probably sometime this month.

  49. Carolyn Flanagan

Do you have more info on affiliate income? or more articles that you wrote about it?

    1. Hey Carolyn,

I haven’t written on affiliate income really yet. I do plan on doing that soon though. Is there anything you would like me to cover in it?

  50. As expected, another solid month income Michelle! You’re one of the bloggers that I really admire!

  51. Rich – RichyFeet

Really interesting! I’m new here. Used to work in digital and social media too and relatively recently launched my own blog. I guess this is the dream, working online! I guess I’m a bit stuck in between working for a business (which I did until June) and now going out and looking for my own clients…easier said than done!

  52. Richard Hicks

Its really quite remarkable that you are making so much money!

    1. Thanks Richard 🙂

  53. Susan Smith

Awesome job Michelle, I just started reading your website and you have a lot of interesting articles about making and saving money. I’m a SAHM and am looking for ways to make money online.

    1. Thank you Susan 🙂

  54. Birdiebee

You are really doing well for yourself. This is so awesome and to be able to stay at home and work. I think you are really amazing!

  55. Beth Anne

I’ve been doing some Virtual Assistant work. In October I got a new client and received a bonus due to a mess up on a payment in September!

  56. Kim

I think that’s a great strategy for affiliate income. I have a hard time because I hate promoting anything. I guess it feels insincere, even if it’s something I use.

    1. Yeah, sometimes I get nervous publishing something that includes an affiliate link. I don’t want this blog to turn into one big advertisement.

  57. Wow, this is an amazing income. Your story is inspiring. I’ll keep reading your posts and hope to learn how to setup a side hustle.

  58. Great work as always Michelle!
Could you give some insight on how you’ve managed to accumulate such an impressive collection of website management and social media clients?

    1. Thanks Joe! Most of my clients reached out to me after finding my blog. It’s the best form of networking!

  59. Great site and congratulations on your income! You’re inspiring!

  60. Stefan

Hey Michelle, thanks for the report. It’s really inspiring to see people make it online during these competitive times 😀
I have a question: when you mention the earnings made from affiliate work, do you refer to the products you promote on this blog or some other products?

    1. When it comes to affiliate, these are all products that I’ve mentioned on my blog. They might be credit cards, blog hosting, Uber, etc.

  61. pragati

    Hello Michelle,

I am visiting here for the first time and your blog is pretty inspiring. It is interesting to note that your income mostly comes from services you provide yourself, as opposed to a lot of affiliate earnings.
Looking forward to regularly following these updates.

    thanks,
    pragati

  62. Solomon Mwale

Thank you so much for sharing these figures with us. You might not know how much you are impacting us using all these posts that you are sharing with us very month.

  63. Awesome report and congrats! This is my first time on your blog. Do you ever post your traffic too? Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks! Sorry, no I don’t ever post my traffic. I receive around 100,000 views a month.

Here’s the link to my newest income report from the other day as well 🙂 – https://www.makingsenseofcents.com/2014/12/14534-november-income-my-monthly-online-income-report.html
