AT&T Inc. provides media, technology, and telecommunication services around the globe. Communications, WarnerMedia, and Latin America are leading segments the corporation operates through.
AT&T went public in July 1984, a year after its establishment. Institutional investors own around 50% of the outstanding shares, an average percentage for companies operating in the major telecommunications industry. It’s vital to follow the largest stockholders. If they sell many stocks, the stock price may plunge. At the same time, an increase in the percentage of institutional investors’ ownership may push the price up.
T’s stock price is very low for a company that has been operating for many years. Therefore, AT&T’s stocks don’t seem attractive to investors. CFD trading may be more beneficial, as it allows trading regardless of the price direction.
Over the past years, the earnings growth has been slightly above the US telecom services industry average, while the revenue growth has been much lower than the industry and market average. When investing in stocks, Warren Buffett considers the return-on-equity percentage. It reflects how effective the company is at generating returns based on the shareholders’ equity. This metric almost equals zero. However, in recent years, the company has been effective at generating profits on assets and capital employed.
Surprisingly, AT&T Inc. has gone through many lawsuits and conflicts. Mostly, the company is involved in offenses related to consumer protection, employment, finances, environment, and competition. It’s harmful to the company, as court cases may cause significant sanctions and fee payments. Moreover, any conflict affects the company’s sales and reputation.

The history of AT&T began in 1877, when Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, founded the Bell Telephone Company. American Telephone and Telegraph Company or AT&T had been one of its subsidiaries since 1885. It was used to build and operate the first long-distance telephone network. In 1899, AT&T purchased Bell's assets to become the parent company. Through the 19th and most of the 20th centuries, AT&T had a monopoly on the US market.
In 1984, the main company lost its monopoly by creating regional subsidiaries and allowing them to be individual companies. However, it didn’t affect the strength of AT&T. As you know, the company still exists.
In 2005, SBC acquired AT&T for $16 billion. As a result, SBC became AT&T Inc. and earned the rights to the name and brand. However, the original 1885 AT&T still exists but as a long-distance phone subsidiary.
The stocks of the combined company, AT&T Inc., are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the #T ticker.
Although T stocks are cheap, they are included in many world stock market indices, such as S&P 500, DJ US, DJ Large-Cap, and DJ Telecom. The company pays dividends, and they have been stable for years. It can be said that T’s dividend yield is higher than the US Telecom Services industry and the US market average. However, the stock price is highly volatile. Thus, CFD trading may be a better option for dealing with AT&T’s stocks.
AT&T creates the largest part of its positive value in relationships, taxes, and knowledge infrastructure categories. On the contrary, the company seems to have a negative contribution to Scarce Human Capital, GHG emissions, and physical diseases categories. To avoid any negative impact on its stocks, the company should either reduce the negative contribution or improve it so it will be positive.
Key AT&T competitors are Comcast, T-Mobile USA, Ayala, Vodafone, Charter Communications, Altice USA, Frontier Communications, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, Deutsche Telekom, Telephone and Data Systems, and Verizon.
