Cisco was founded in 1984 by Stanford computer scientists Leonard Bosack and his wife Sandy Lerner. Currently, the company’s headquarters is located in San Jose, CA, USA.
Cisco’s history began with a scandal. Bosack, while still employed at Stanford, developed the first router with Cisco’s co-founder Kirk Lougheed. However, it was a copy of Stanford’s "Blue Box" router. It ran a non-licensed copy of Stanford’s multi-protocol router software that was incorporated into the foundation of Cisco IOS.
In 1986, Bosack and Lougheed were fired from Stanford. Still, in 1987, the university agreed to license Cisco router software and two computer boards.
However, the conflict didn’t affect the company's future. Nowadays, Cisco provides a wide range of products and services for a variety of customers, including service providers, small and medium businesses, corporations, government agencies, utilities, and educational institutions.
Even if you already knew that information, it’s unlikely you’ve heard about the Cisco Networking Academy. It was founded in October 1997. Currently, the Academy is located in more than 12,000 places worldwide. Students can study various areas of networking for the Internet online and offline. This way, the company finds employees to broaden its company and helps young people get the required skills to find a well-paid job.
