Tripadvisor is a service that allows travelers to plan trips around the world. Users can reserve a hotel, book transportation, or a table in a restaurant on the website or via a mobile application. The main content of the site is user reviews and photos.

The company was founded in 2000 by Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert, Nick Shanny, and Thomas Palka. Tripadvisor received part of the start-up capital from private investors. The other part of the money was obtained from Flagship Ventures and the Bollard Group. The company's headquarters are in Needham, Massachusetts, USA.

In 2004, IAC/InterActiveCorp Corporation bought Tripadvisor. A year later, the IAC spun off its travel companies into a separate holding, Expedia, Inc. In 2011, the service became a separate company. After which, its shares began trading on NASDAQ under the ticker #TRIP. As a result of the IPO, Tripadvisor raised $3.5 billion. By 2022, the market capitalization has reached $4 billion. Tripadvisor shares are included in many indexes, including S&P 500, Dow Jones US, Dow Jones Mid-Cap, NASDAQ Composite, and NASDAQ Industrial.

The value of #TRIP securities is relatively low, but the company does not pay dividends to holders. CFD trading can be more profitable than buying shares, as it allows traders to profit from the price difference. For example, in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, #TRIP stocks were worth just $13.76 per asset. In 2022, their value has risen to $24.56. Such volatility provides traders with a good opportunity to earn money.

From 2017 to 2019, Tripadvisor generated $2 billion in annual revenue. However, in 2020, it fell sharply to $604 million due to the pandemic. In 2021 and 2022, revenue increased but did not reach pre-pandemic levels. The same applies to profits. In 2020, the company's net income was -289 million dollars. In 2021, the negative impact of the pandemic continued, as profits rose only to -148 million dollars. Traders need to keep a close eye on the news to know what the company is doing to increase profits.

Profitable trading is facilitated by qualitative analysis. Thus, traders need to study financial indicators and be aware of news, competitors' performance, lawsuits, purchases, and sales of assets. The best time to trade TRIP shares is during the US trading session, from 16:30 to 23:00 (GMT+3, indicated in LiteFinance trading platform).

Risk warning: Trading in FX and CFDs entails high risk of losing capital.

Interesting facts about the #TRIP (TripAdvisor)

In 2020, the company rebranded and changed its name from TripAdvisor to Tripadvisor, replacing the capital "A" with a lowercase one.

In 2014, Tripadvisor was named the most popular travel site, according to STR. The company operates in 49 countries in 28 languages worldwide. The site has 70 million registered users, and by 2019 the number of unique users reached 463 million per month. It contains 859 million reviews of 8.6 million establishments in different parts of the world. In 2021, the app entered the TOP 10 best travel services in 26 countries.

Tripadvisor was one of the first to implement the user-generated content. Users can anonymously write reviews and post ads, so it can be quite difficult to verify their authenticity, which is why the company has repeatedly been involved in scandals. For example, in 2013, one of the users registered a non-existent restaurant on the platform. As a result, visitors had to look for it in an alley filled with garbage cans. The ad was removed only two months later.

In 2017, Vice magazine published an article where the infamous journalist Oobah Butler told how he brought the fictional restaurant The Shed at Dulwich to first place in the ranking of restaurants in London. He admitted that he had previously made money by writing fake reviews for establishments on Tripadvisor, receiving 10 euros for each review. The Shed at Dulwich was removed from the website only after Butler let visitors into the restaurant and fed them with ready-made lunches from the supermarket.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the travel industry and Tripadvisor hard. In 2020, the company had to cut 900 employees and close offices in Boston and San Francisco. To compensate for this reputation loss, Tripadvisor partnered with Walgreens to launch a project supporting safer travel. As part of the campaign, users were given access to free COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at one of the thousands of care centers in the United States.
