The predecessor of Kering Corporation, Pinault S.A., was founded in 1963 by French entrepreneur Francois Pinault. Initially, it was a timber-trading company.
Since 2005, the president of Kering has been the son of the founder, François-Henri Pinault. Since then, the company has focused on the production of luxury goods. The corporation's name is consonant with the English word "caring". It is also a tribute to the Pinault family, as in Brittany, where the businessman is from, the word "kêr" means "home".
In 2008, the company created The Kering Foundation to support gender equality initiatives. Kering has also partnered with the Chime for Change campaign for women's education and health. In addition, the company took part in the White Ribbon project dedicated to the problems of violence against women. The Women in Motion program was launched to raise the issue of discrimination against women in the film industry.
Kering SA has also significantly contributed to reducing the fashion industry's negative impact on the environment. The company was the first to use 100% organic cotton for production. In addition, from 2022, all corporation brands will completely abandon using natural fur.
A controlling stake in the corporation (40.8%) belongs to the Artémis Groupe S.A holding, known for its investments in the fashion industry, winemaking, art, and much more. Its CEO is also François-Henri Pinault.
