United Utilities is the UK's largest publicly traded water supply company. Its shares are listed on London Stock Exchange as #UU and make a component of the FTSE 100 index. The company's market capitalization amounts to £7.51 billion.
United Utilities Group pays dividends, showing a small but steady growth in recent years. At the same time, one share price is quite high, so not everyone can afford this type of investing. A profitable alternative would be CFD trading, which allows you to earn from the exchange rate difference.
To maximize profits and minimize risks, a trader needs to analyze data that can affect the value of shares: the company's financial performance and news. Positive factors include, for example, a £500 million loan approved by the European Investment Bank. The trust of such large institutions is an indicator of United Utilities' success and reliability.
Like other large companies, United Utilities sometimes runs into problems. In 2015, cryptosporidium was found in the water supply systems in several cities. This parasite can cause gastrointestinal diseases in humans. No cases of the disease were identified, but the company's reputation was badly affected: it had to pay £300,000 in fines and £18 million in compensation to customers. Legal expenses cost another £150,000. To recover its good name, the United Utilities Group held several workshops for other companies in case they encountered the same problem.
Also, it's a good practice to familiarize oneself with competitors' activities and financial performance to determine the industry's state and make a forecast for the stock value. United Utilities Group's main competitors are Northumbrian Water Group, Pennon Group, and Severn Trent.
Risk warning: Trading in FX and CFDs entails high risk of losing capital.

In 1989, the North West Water Authority became private and was renamed North West Water. In 1995, the organization took over the North Western Electricity Board (NORWEB) to form United Utilities.
In the early 2000s, the group sold several of its assets, namely Vertex and the telecommunications company Your Communications. Also, United Utilities got rid of a stake in Electricity North West's energy company. However, its electrical network remained under United Utilities until 2010, when Electricity North West bought out the division.
United Utilities Group supplies clean water to a region of 7.3 million people. The company provides services to 3 million households and 200,000 corporate clients.
United Utilities maintains 42,000 km of water pipes, 78,000 km of sewerage, 566 wastewater treatment facilities, and 37 renewable energy facilities. It owns 166 reservoirs, not all of which are located in North West England. For example, the Valehouse Reservoir is located in Longdendale, Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region.
Since 1998, #UU shares have been listed on the US stock exchange NYSE. In 2007 the company delisted its shares.
